Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

The Body Keeps the Score

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a body-oriented talking therapy that integrates verbal techniques with body-centered interventions. SP was founded by Pat Ogden and refined by contributions from Alan Schore, Bessel van der Kolk, Onno van der Hart, Ellert Nijenhuis and Daniel Siegel. Its methods are based on a deep understanding of the effects of trauma on brain development and attachment systems. This approach uses the body, its impulses, movements, structure and posture, as an entry point in treatment. Then, through mindful attention, patterns of relating to self and others that have become limiting and/or problematic are addressed, while also promoting the discovery of new, more adaptive responses. SP emphasizes a holistic integration of physical, emotional and cognitive processing in order to create lasting change.

When you hear something you will forget it
When you see something you will remember it
But only when you do something will you understand it
— Chinese Proverb
